The photograph depicts a unique freestanding installation El Lissitzky designed for the international press fair known as PRESSA, which took place in Cologne, in 1928. As the Soviet Union's premier graphic artist and photographer, he was designated artistic director for the country's displays, and designed this remarkable 3-dimensional photomontage about women (which was on display in their pavilion) as well as other items, including smaller collages consisting of newspaper articles and photographs. Five such collages have survived and one is in the Museum Ludwig, Cologne.
